The Drawings of Mary Shea may just change your life; if you let them. They are at once piercing and then again introspective. The are a soliloquy to the philosophical and existential human experience. Unlike other refined works of her portfolio, here in this show of drawings she exhibits the soulfulness of her subjects with direct tenderness needed to portray them. One can see her clear respect for the figure as she captures magic through simplistic forms: gesture, expression or action. One is reminded of Hockney, Hopper and Diebenkorn when peering into the picture plane. One cannot but help to be captivated by the stories that come across in such fine and elegant lines.
We welcome Mary to the ArtForma Cohort. Her story includes an MFA in Drawing, at the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture and Art; a BFA in Painting and Sculpture, Art Academy of Cincinnati; further study at the New York Studio School of Drawing, and Painting and Sculpture Yale Summer School of Music and Art. These great institutions have developed an artist of remarkable talent and clarity over her subjects and their own personal stories. We are grateful and lucky to have her wonderful perspective and works here in Seattle.
